Information technology is a broad profession with a lot of specialisms. On one end of the spectrum there are the absolute generalists that know relatively little about a large area. On the other end we see the pure specialists that know a lot about a rather small part. Both are needed: the generalist for the advisor role, the helicopter view, the architect role and the functional project leadership. The specialist to enable the implementation, optimization and the technical project leadership.

In my opinion there is lot of need for a less strict separation and for people who are actually both generalist and specialist. This is what I always strived for: I combine an in-depth knowledge of the mostly used Oracle technology with general knowledge of other IT areas. I can communicate with all kinds of people in your organization: the manager that wants a problem to be solved, but also the end-user of the solution. I can help to pinpoint a problem and describe it, I can search for the best possible technical solution and implement it as well. And I always have performance, security and maintainability as primary goals. That is in my opinion the kind of people a lot of organizations want: there are generalists and specialists...try the combination, that will be very effective!
